A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
